From Inner Music to Imagery: A Night of Poetry with Mahmoud Nael

Poets of Khuzestan Gather at Ahvaz BookCity:

From Inner Music to Imagery: A Night of Poetry with Mahmoud Nael

The 503rd session of the “Ahvaz White Poetry Association” took place on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, at Ahvaz BookCity, under the direction of Alireza Shekarriz. Dedicated to the poetry and literary legacy of Mahmoud Nael—one of Khuzestan’s most respected poets, critics, and teachers—the event brought together a vibrant audience of poets, students, and lovers of contemporary Persian poetry for readings, brief critiques, and open conversation.

Opening the evening, Shekarriz welcomed the participants and thanked the Ahvaz BookCity team—especially Ehssan Jahanshahi and Mahmoud Naderi—for their consistent support of literary programs. He noted that the Association’s weekly gatherings provide a space for poetic dialogue, critical engagement, and shared reflection. Introducing the guest of honor, Shekarriz described Nael as “a patient mentor and a noble soul,” recalling his own years as Nael’s student and reminding attendees that “a poet’s true calling goes far beyond publication—it is to remain engaged, questioning, and alive to the world.”

In his remarks, Mahmoud Nael revisited his early literary path in the 1980s, recalling his involvement with the Association of Committed and Muslim Poets of Khuzestan and the formative influence of the late Sheyda Dezfouli on successive generations of poets. He also read selections from his most recent poems, offering a glimpse into his evolving voice—marked by inner rhythm, vivid imagery, and reflective calm.

Following Nael’s talk, a number of poets from Khuzestan—including Mohammad Sharifi, Karim Khosravi, Habibollah Bahrami, Majid Karimi, and Rahim Shishegar—read their own works and shared memories of friendship and collaboration with the honored poet. Between readings, Shekarriz recited excerpts from Nael’s poems, emphasizing his mastery of musical phrasing and emotional resonance.

Dr. Mahmoud Naderi, Cultural Director of Ahvaz BookCity, closed the event by expressing his gratitude to both the organizers and attendees: “It is an honor for BookCity to serve as a meeting place founded on awareness and wisdom—to be, in essence, a beacon of light for our city.”

The evening ended with the presentation of a commemorative plaque from the Ahvaz White Poetry Association and Ahvaz BookCity to Mahmoud Nael, followed by a group photograph marking yet another memorable night in the city’s literary life.

The weekly poetry gatherings at Ahvaz BookCity will continue, reaffirming the institution’s social and cultural mission: to provide a platform for dialogue, creativity, and connection among writers and readers; to celebrate the living tradition of Persian poetry; and to nurture local voices that reflect the diverse spirit of Khuzestan.
